Scientists from the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (Berlin, Germany) and the Technical University Berlin have received the Karl Heinz Beckurts Award for contributing to the development of the international H.264/MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) standard for video compression.
Professor Thomas Wiegand, Dr. Detlev Marpe, and Dr. Heiko Schwarz accepted the EUR 30,000 award, which is given each year to honor the scientific and technical achievements of researchers in Germany.
The H.264/MPEG-4 AVC standard is a particularly efficient form of video compression which is currently being used in more than 1.5 billion devices worldwide.
