Video detection specialist Traficon (Wevelgem, Belgium) has been awarded a contract to supply its video image processor boards for an intelligent traffic monitoring application inside the Södra Länken and Norra Länken tunnels in Stockholm, Sweden.

Traficon will provide some 763 of its VIP-T video image processor boards for the task, which have been designed for automatic incident detection and traffic data analysis.

Video signals from the cameras monitoring the traffic are input to the image processor boards. Detection zones are then superimposed onto the video images and vehicles crossing the zones are detected. The video processors then analyze the video images to generate traffic data and alarms.

Twenty-two of the company's image-processing boards have already been installed in the Södra Länken tunnel. In cooperation with traffic specialists Swarco Sweden and ISG Systems, Traficon will install another 370 modules in the course of 2012.

The installation of the 393 boards for the Norra Länken tunnel is expected to start after 2012.
