A California-based startup has recently received $5.6m in funding and soon plans to launch a new 3-D camera based on the same Primesense sensor used in the Kinect.

Lux Capital led the investment in Matterport (Mountain View, CA, USA) with participation from Felicis Ventures, Red Swan Ventures, Greylock, Qualcomm Ventures, as well as a number of prominent Silicon Valley angels.

The soon-to-be launched Matterport 3-D capture system uses a patented camera unit controlled by an Apple iPad that captures 3-D images of the interior of a room. The images are then uploaded to a server that stitches them together to create a 3-D model, ready for walking through or viewing as a floor plan.

The resulting image can be viewed on any computer and the Apple iPad. Users can also measure, tag objects, and pin notes to any objects in the image.

Founded in 2011, Matterport raised $1.6m in seed financing in 2012 to develop initial versions of the camera hardware and software. The new funding will enable the company to scale production to meet market demand.
