More than 100 participants were in attendance at the 2013 European Machine Vision Association (EMVA) business conference held June 6-8 in Barcelona, Spain, where industry experts discussed the current and future state of machine vision.
This year’s event, which marks the 10th anniversary of the EMVA, featured the following machine vision-related presentations:
- Machine Vision in Spain, in which EMVA president and CEO of DataPixel Toni Ventura-Traveset gave an outlook of the current and future machine vision market in Spain.
- Machine Vision in Consumer Products, in which Roger Scheffer from SoftKinetic covered machine vision technology in consumer products, including 3D and TOF technology, as well as future market opportunities.
- Machine Vision Challenges for Remote Handling, in which Dr. Alessandro Tesini, ITER's Remote Handling Section Leader, presented on the international large-scale nuclear fusion research project ITER, which is supposed to become a new reference term for science projects, and–due to extremely high temperatures and radiation levels will to a large extent rely on machine vision supported remote handling and inspection.
- Image Sensors 2020 Outlook, in which Paul Danini from Yole Dévelopment gave an outlook on the development of the image sensor sector until 2020.
- Future Standards Forum: Development of MV standards taken to the next level, in which Jochem Herrmann, newly elected member of the EMVA board of directors and chief scientist for Adimec Holding, touched on the need for MV standards, the global coordination of standards, and the future standards forum, which is a forum for the exchange of information about standards and technologies for the industry.
The EMVA Young Professional Award for 2013 was also presented to Ruud Barth, computer vision scientist at Wageningen University and Research Center in Wageningen, Netherlands for his computer vision application for the automatic registration, recognition, and analysis of broccoli for robotizedharvesting.
In addition, the conference featured presentations on the European economy, marketing in social networks, mergers and acquisitions in China, European market data and research funding, and knowledge economics and machine vision. At the General Assembly, Toni Ventura-Traveset reviewed the organization’s growth path while its general manager Thomas Lübkemeier announced that the EMVA will present the International Machine Vision Standards Exhibition at SPS IPC Drives 2013, taking place November 26-28 in Nuremberg, Germany.
The 2014 EMVA Business conference will be held in Vienna, Austria.
