Report: Machine vision growth to be aided by non-industrial vision

Oct. 24, 2013
A new report suggests that the overall market for machine vision products is expected to grow to more than $6 billion in 2016, and that the growth will be aided by an increasing need for machine vision outside of manufacturing applications, including traffic monitoring, logistics, and surveillance.

A report from VDC Research predicts that not only will the overall market for machine vision products grow to more than $6 billion in 2016, but that the growth will be aided by an increasing need for machine vision outside of manufacturing applications.

Machine vision software and professional services, or systems integration, are expected to lead the yearly high-single digit growth rates, but the growth will be aided by a variety of industries looking for vision systems to identify, recognize, and measure the dimensions of products in such applications as logistics, traffic monitoring solutions, and surveillance, according to a press release on the report.

In addition, there is expected to be an increase in demand for application-specific machine vision systems that offer turnkey solutions. The major driver of growth, however, is expected to be the demand for professional services, particularly integration services.

"Vendors that can combine these designs and development efforts with vertical domain expertise will be rewarded with demand for higher margin professional services for solution design and consulting, deployment, and integration," said Richa Gupta, VDC Research senior analyst in the press release.

She also suggested that hardware vendors must not ignore that professional services opportunity, and that participating in this segment can strengthen their role and provide additional opportunities for revenue.
