Edmund Optic’s Educational Award, which acknowledges novel projects involving optics that will have an impact on future applications, will for the first time since the award’s inception consider all 45 finalists for the Norman Edmund Inspiration Award.
The Educational Award is given annually to undergraduate and graduate programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at non-profit colleges and universities working on projects involving optics. In 2013, the following projects were awarded with the top prize of $10,000 in Edmund Optics projects for their work:
- Americas: University of Illinois at Chicago, submitted by Simon Alford. This award was given for the development of a novel approach to protein-protein interactions in live cell imaging using a combination of total internal reflection microscopy and fluorescence anisotropy that allows the determination of real-time binding rates of proteins within lipid membranes.
- Asia: KAIST, South Korea, submitted by YongKeun Park. This award was given for the development of holography-based imaging techniques designed to study human disease including the investigation of malaria, cancer, and neuro-diseases.
- Europe: University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, submitted by Craig Mackay. This award was given for the development of a new kind of instrument intended for the largest ground-based optical telescopes, which will deliver much higher angular resolution than any space-based images by combined a 5-10 meter class telescope with an adaptive optics system.
The Norman Edmund Inspiration Award is given to the optics program that best embodies the legacy of Norman Edmund. It consists of $5,000 in product donations and all 45 global Edmund Optics Award finalists will be eligible to receive it. Finalists will be asked to answer one additional qualification question as part of the application process. This question will be communicated to the finalists during the announcement on September 16, 2014, with responses due on October, 2014. A winner will be selected at the sole discretion of the Edmund Optics Board of Directors Committee.
