A separate report released by the VDMA Photonics Forum indicates that the German photonics industry saw a growth of 4% in 2014. This prediction comes from the Arbeitsgruppe Marktforschung Photonik [Photonics Market Research Work Group] in which the industry associations SPECTARIS, VDMA, and ZVEI are represented.

The 4% growth to 30 billion euros came as a result of dynamic growth in core areas and a rise in exports. Subsectors contributing to the positive growth include laser systems and sources (11% and 5%, respectively), image processing (16%) and lithography (15-16%), which in addition to higher domestic sales also profited from an even stronger export growth. Other areas of Germany’s photonics industry that saw growth from 2013 to 2014 include medical technology (6%), and the LED/lighting (market share in outdoor lighting exceeded 50%.)

Looking toward 2015, growth is expected to be as dynamic as 2014, which puts the photonics industry back on track to achieve the long-term growth forecast that was predicted in the 2013 Photonics Industry report. This report had predicted an average growth rate for the photonics industry from 2011 to 2020 to 1.5 times the global gross domestic product. According to the forecast, the industry will reach a world market volume of 615 billion euros by 2020, based on a market volume of 350 billion euros in 2011.
