In total, thecameras have helped Thailand police identify a total of 10 possible people who are suspected of involvement in the explosion. The two men that are currently being held and questioned were captured on camera shortly before the explosion, which occurred on Monday, at Erawan Shrine in Bangkok. The two suspects were wearing red and white T-shirts at the time of the blast, and they stood up from a bench before a third suspect, who were yellow, sat down and left a backpack at the site.
CNN reported that the two men are suspected of protecting and hiding the prime suspect as he decided where to plant the bomb on site. A local taxi driver told CNN that the man in yellow did not appear to be Thai, did not speak, and spoke an unfamiliar language to someone on hismobile phone. He is identified as a foreign national, but the suspects are “unlikely” to be members of an international terror group, according to a spokesman for the ruling military junta.
Around 21 minutes of footage was captured by the security cameras of the three suspects at the scene of the attack, which killed 20 people and injured more than 120 others.
Security cameras also helped identify the two perpetrators of the Boston Marathon bombing. Additionally, during the subsequent chase, an infrared camera was used by Massachusetts State Police to locate the second terrorist hiding in a boat in Watertown, MA, USA. More than anything else, this story along with the aforementioned Boston bombing-related stories highlights the importance that cameras and imaging can have when it comes to security, surveillance, and defense.
