Named after the ancient Greek and Roman mythical guardian of the underworld, the Cerberus vision system from Visual Engineering outfits a dog with a harness-mounted camera to provide eyes for the dog’s handler in military applications.
Cerberus provides an encrypted video link from the canine to the handler and can operate in a non-line-of-sight environment. The system’s range is typically 300 – 500m none line of sight, with a handler observing the video using the portable receiver supplied in the kit. The camera includes a microphone and can be upgraded to include high-definition cameras and an audio recorder. The current system features a 1/3” CMOS image sensor with MPEG2 video coding (optional MPEG4), and an RS232 data interface.
Additionally, the system features modulated infrared LEDs, white LEDS, antenna and battery technology, and an IP66-rated enclosure with a spring-loaded arm, which is used to activate the system. It also features on-board recording and 8 selectable channels for transmission. Initial channel programming is conducted via a PC application, which is provided with the system.
Visual Engineering’s system has been shock, vibration, altitude, and fluid ingress tested, enabling it to operate in extreme environments.
Furthermore, the system can be upgraded to include a 320 x 240 infrared camera for thermal imaging tasks.
The Cerberus canine vision system enables the dogs to be used in such tasks as scouting, search and rescue, reconnaissance, and other military applications.
