Sony Corporation has completed the acquisition of Softkinetic Systems, a company that specializes in 3D vision technology, including 3D Time of Flight sensors and cameras.

Softkinetic Systems develops 3D Time of Flight range image sensor technology, as well as related systems andsoftware. This includes the company’s patented DepthSense 3D imaging Time of Flight CMOS image sensors, as well as its DepthSense CMOS 3D cameras and models for 3D vision in industrial and consumer applications.

In recent news, the Belgium-based Softkinetic Systems was chosen to be part of two separate research consortiums—CISTERN and EXIST—assembled in order to advance CMOS image sensor technology. CISTERN has an objective of researching technologies for CMOS image sensors needed in the future for a number of industries, including broadcast and entertainment, high-end security, and multispectral imaging. EXIST will investigate and develop innovative new technologies for image sensors needed in the next two generations for systems designed to improve citizen security, safety, and healthcare.

Both programs began in May 2015 and will be completed in 2018. Learn more about CISTERN (CMOS Image Sensor TEchnologies’ Readiness for Next generation of applications) and EXtended Imaging Sensor Technologies (EXIST)here.

Sony will focus on combining Softkinetic’s Time of Flight technology expertise with its own technologies with the aim of developing the next generation of range image sensors and solutions, not only in the field of imaging, but for broader sensing-related applications as well.
