Imaging and machine vision book recommendations: 12/7

Dec. 7, 2015
As part of our Solutions in Vision series, we want to provide our readers with as many resources on imaging and machine vision as possible. As part of this, Andy Wilson, Vision Systems Design Editor in Chief, has compiled a list of educational and informative books on various imaging topics that he personally recommends. Check out this week’s recommendations.

As part of ourSolutions in Vision series, we want to provide our readers with as many resources on imaging and machine vision as possible. As part of this, Andy Wilson, Vision Systems Design Editor in Chief, has compiled a list of educational and informative books on various imaging topics that he personally recommends. Check out this week’s recommendations here:

  • Digital Image Processing for Medical Applications by Geoff Dougherty: Image processing is a hands-on discipline, and the best way to learn is by doing. This text takes its motivation from medical applications and uses real medical images and situations to illustrate and clarify concepts and to build intuition, insight and understanding. Designed for advanced undergraduates and graduate students who will become end-users of digital image processing, it covers the basics of the major clinical imaging modalities, explaining how the images are produced and acquired.
  • Fundamentals of Digital Image Processingby Anil K. Jain: Presents a thorough overview of the major topics of digital image processing, beginning with the basic mathematical tools needed for the subject. Includes a comprehensive chapter on stochastic models for digital image processing. Covers aspects of image representation including luminance, color, spatial and temporal properties of vision, and digitization. Explores various image processing techniques. Discusses algorithm development (software/firmware) for image transforms, enhancement, reconstruction, and image coding.
  • Introduction to Image Processing and Analysisby John C. Russ, J. Christian Russ: Image processing comprises a broad variety of methods that operate on images to produce another image. A unique textbook, Introduction to Image Processing and Analysis establishes the programming involved in image processing and analysis by utilizing skills in C compiler and both Windows and MacOS programming environments. The provided mathematical background illustrates the workings of algorithms and emphasizes the practical reasons for using certain methods, their effects on images, and their appropriate applications.
  • Digital Image Processing Using MATLAB, 2nd ed. 2nd Edition by Rafael C. Gonzalez, Richard E. Woods, Steven L. Eddins: Digital Image Processing Using MATLAB is the first book to offer a balanced treatment of image processing fundamentals and the software principles used in their implementation. The book integrates material from the leading text, Digital Image Processing by Gonzalez and Woods, and the Image Processing Toolbox from The MathWorks, Inc., a leader in scientific computing. The Image Processing Toolbox provides a stable, well-supported software environment for addressing a broad range of applications in digital image processing
  • Practical Algorithms for Image Analysis: Description, Examples, and Codeby Michael Seul, Lawrence O'Gorman, Michael J. Sammon: This book offers guided access to a collection of algorithms for the digital manipulation and analysis of images. Written in classic "cookbook" style, it reflects the authors' long experience as users and developers of image analysis algorithms and software. For each task, they present a description and implementation of the most suitable procedure in easy-to-use form. The algorithms range from the simplest steps to advanced functions not commonly available for Windows users.
