Vision 20/20 flashback: Vision Systems Design in January 1997

Jan. 14, 2016
This year, Vision Systems Design celebrates its 20th anniversary. Throughout the year—as part of our Vision 20/20 series— we are going to encourage people to think about where the imaging and machine vision industry could be headed in the next 20 years, while also taking a look back at the past 20 years. This article looks at January 1997.

This year,Vision Systems Design celebrates its 20th anniversary. Throughout the year—as part of our Vision 20/20series we are going to encourage people to think about where the imaging and machine vision industry could be headed in the next20 years, while also taking a look back at the past 20 years.

For this particular flashback, we go all the way to January of 1997, whereAndy’s editorial discussed the trend of systems integrators buying OEM products, instead of building them. One particularly still-relevant line said:

"For the systems integrator to remain competitive, new technology must be adopted, while systems with the same look-and-feel as those already deployed in the field continue to be produced."

Feature article topics include rendering 3D images with a networked multiprocessor, web inspection of coating defects, intelligent vision systems for airport security, and off-the-shelf processors being used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To get an idea of the difference between technology today and in 1997, take a look back at these articles—you may find them interesting.

In the Tech Trends section, applications including image compression, laser scanners, smart cameras, X-ray imaging, robotic vision systems, imaging algorithms, and baggage inspection are covered.

Many new products were covered in this issue as well, a few of which include a computer-to-video converter, imaging boards and software, a CCD camera, and machine vision lighting.

We will continue to highlight archived issues in the future, so keep an eye out for more “blast from the past” articles from Vision Systems Design.
