This year, Vision Systems Design celebrates its 20th anniversary. Throughout the year—as part of our Vision 20/20series we are going to encourage people to think about where the imaging and machine vision industry could be headed in the next20 years, while also taking a look back at the past 20 years.

In this flashback, we take a look at the topics that were covered right before the start of the new century, in the December 1999 issue. Andy’s editorial touched on a lawsuit involving a major machine vision company that is one of the largest companies in the market today, as well as how the effects of this lawsuit reached beyond this case.

He closed the article by noting that: "The ramifications of patent battles continue to adversely affect the marketability, sales, and promotion of machine vision and image processing technologies."

Feature article topics in this magazine included the VISION show in Stuttgart, CMOS image sensors, standard digital camera interfaces, increased computer power, robotics, and high-speed imaging. The issue also detailed articles on vision inspection of automotive parts and electronics and semiconductors.

Andy also wrote a spotlight article on reconfigurable imaging, and how programmable silicon building blocks enable designers to equate specific imaging application requirements so that working platforms are produced faster and easier.

Lastly, Andy wrote a product focus article on embedded chips in advanced cameras.

"By incorporating built-in processors, interfaces, and software; cameras are improving overall system performance at less cost," he wrote.

Take a look at the December 1999 issue.

We will continue to highlight archived issues in the future, so keep an eye out for more "blast from the past" articles from Vision Systems Design.
