Tunable focus lens startup company TAG Optics has entered into a strategic partnership with Mitutoyo Corporation, which will include comprehensive technological alliance and cooperation.

The partnership—which will facilitate Mitutoyo’s eventual acquisition of a controlling interest in TAG Optics—is centered on the use and development of TAG Optics’ TAG Lens for precisionmeasurement application and will include the joint development of the technology for inclusion into Mitutoyo’s large optical product systems portfolio.

TAG lenses have the ability to give more than a 30x increase in the original depth of field, can change focal length in sub-micro seconds, and provide true on/off state without having to change optics. The lens is a type of gradient index of refraction (GRIN) lens that uses standing sound waves to produce a constantly changing gradient index of refraction within a liquid contained in the lens.

"The addition of the world’s fastest focusing lens, the TAG Lens, to our portfolio of high precision optics will enable us to create new innovations in metrology and continue to provide our customers with world leading systems," said Toru Nakagawa, President of Mitutoyo Corporation.

TAG Optics’ tunable lens technology was originally developed in Professor Craig Arnold’s research group at Princeton University. The company had previously received SBIR support from the National Science Foundation for the development and commercialization of this technology.

"The formation of this partnership validates TAG Optics' technology platform and our commercialization and productization efforts from the past 5 years," said Christian Theriault, President and CEO of TAG Optics. "We are thrilled to enter into an alliance with Mitutoyo Corporation, the world's leader and most trusted brand in precision optics, measurement and inspection solutions."

The new partnership will include product enhancements and value creation in Mitutoyo’s line of optical measuring and inspection systems, while providing the TAG Technology with new development and manufacturing capabilities. The deal will enable TAG Optics to develop new TAG-enabled systems for machine and robotic vision in addition to biological market segments.
