This year, Vision Systems Design celebrates its 20th anniversary. Throughout the year—as part of our Vision 20/20series we are going to encourage people to think about where the imaging and machine vision industry could be headed in the next20 years, while also taking a look back at the past 20 years.

In Andy’s April 2002 editorial, he wrote that "The time taken for vendors to solve your specific problem often costs more than the product they are trying to sell you."

This editorial, as you may have surmised, talks about the costs associated with engineering and OEM imaging component development and how some companies even make promises they find difficult to keep. As a result suggested Andy, many engineering managers found themselves turning to systems integrators to solve their needs.

With an eye toward the business side of the industry, Andy also wrote an article about the AIA Business Conference, which was held in Las Vegas in March of 2002. The theme of this particular show, according to Andy, was that of an economic rebound just shortly after the events of 9/11.

Feature article topics included a vision system that helped to identify crime suspects, a vision system that inspected yarn packages, a vision system that assessed oil-seal surfaces, and FireWire cameras. Additionally, the Technology Trends topics from this issue included multispectral cameras, automotive inspection, glass inspection, and image compression techniques.

In this issue’s new products section, Andy covered—among a number of other new products—frame grabbers, a spectral imaging system, mix-and-match objectives, and CMOS and CCD cameras.

Take a look at the April 2002 issue.

We will continue to highlight archived issues in the future, so keep an eye out for more “blast from the past” articles from Vision Systems Design.
