Vision 20/20 flashback: Vision Systems Design in May 2001

March 4, 2016
In this flashback, we travel back to the spring of 2001, where in the May editorial, where Andy wrote about how the increased use of Ethernet on the factory floor. Referring to Ethernet-based systems, he wrote: "Despite the increased interest in Ethernet, developers have been hesitant to use such networks to transfer data on the plant floor because of the lack of interoperability among competing vendors' devices."

This year, Vision Systems Design celebrates its 20th anniversary. Throughout the year—as part of our Vision 20/20series we are going to encourage people to think about where the imaging and machine vision industry could be headed in the next20 years, while also taking a look back at the past 20 years.

Interesting to look back on this now, isn’t it? Visit the link below to read more about what some experts in the field were saying about Ethernet technology at the time.

Andy also wrote an article about how “machine vision and image processing systems are solving a range of application problems,” and how “the design of these systems nearly always exceeds the application demands for improved performance.

Other feature article topics included 3D imaging for surgical operations, automotive manufacturing inspection, CMOS challenging CCD sensors, genetic imaging, and optical storage systems. Additionally, in the "Technology Trends," section, Andy took a look at novel imager design, scientic image processing, vision-guided magnet inspection,3D rendering in medical imaging, and MRI analysis software.

In this issue’s new products section, Andy covered a Camera Link imaging board, imaging software, an OCR/barcode reader, a CMOS camera, and much more.

Take a look at the May 2001 issue.

We will continue to highlight archived issues in the future, so keep an eye out for more "blast from the past" articles from Vision Systems Design.
