This year, Vision Systems Design celebrates its 20th anniversary. Throughout the year—as part of our Vision 20/20 series— we are going to encourage people to think about where the imaging and machine vision industry could be headed in the next 20 years, while also taking a look back at the past 20 years.

This year,Vision Systems Design celebrates its 20th anniversary. Throughout the year—as part of our Vision 20/20series we are going to encourage people to think about where the imaging and machine vision industry could be headed in the next20 years, while also taking a look back at the past 20 years.

Ever the interesting resource for thoughts on the latest technologies, trends, and developments, Andy Wilson’s "My View" articles have been published in every issue of Vision Systems Design. Back in the February 2006 editorial, "Strength in numbers," Andy opined that "In solving machine vision system design challenges, it is possible to creatively re-invent the wheel-but it’s not necessary."

He went on to talk about how there are a myriad of complex challenges and needs presented by those using, or in need of using vision systems, but help is out there. Specifically, at the time, Andy cited an "Ask the experts," section of the website at the time.

"With more than 30,000 readers of the publication alone, and a possible 30,000 additional Web site readers, someone may have already solved the problem you are facing," he wrote.

While both of these numbers have changed over the years, the fact that you can use Vision Systems Design as a resource has not. We may not have a dedicated "Ask the experts" section anymore, but should you find yourself with a specific question about vision, perhaps we can point you to someone who can. With that in mind, please feel free toreach out at any time.

In the February cover story, Andy provided details on a3D vision system that was used to check automotive tires. The system utilized a laser-based illumination source, off-the-shelf CMOS camera, frame grabber, and PC-based software.

Elsewhere in the issue, Andy wrote about a smart camera system that inspected beer bottles, a vision system that analyzes disease, the overall (expanding) market for smart cameras, and using LED lighting in machine vision.

In this issue’s new products section, Andy covered—among a number of other new products—a DVR board, high-resolution CCD cameras, a lens cleaning kit, an infrared camera, and an IP engine.

Take a look at the February 2006 issue.

We will continue to highlight archived issues in the future, so keep an eye out for more “blast from the past” articles from Vision Systems Design.
