My very first scheduled meeting of VISION 2016took place on the morning of Tuesday, November 8, with industrial CMOS camera company Photonfocus, which is located in Lachen, Switzerland.

During my meeting with Sergio Manuel, International Sales Engineer, we talked about several different topics related to machine vision and imaging. Manuel told me that his company has developed a number of new cameras, included 3D cameras for laser triangulation systems, high speed and hyperspectral cameras, mainly as a result of market request.

"There were requests for robust cameras with faster rates, A/B shaft encoder interface, and global shutter, along with industrial housing for harsh environments and an accurate trigger," he said, referring to the company’s MV1-D1280-L01-3D05-1280-G2 camera for 3D triangulation.

This camera features a 1280 x 1024 CMOS image sensor with a 6.6 µm pixel size that can reach speeds of 40,000 fps at 1280 x 20 pixels. It also features a GigE interface, 57 dB dynamic range, and an 8-bit gray scale resolution, along with the specifications Manuel mentioned above.

Cameras developed by Photonfocus are deployed in a whole range of applications, including automotive, electronics, railway, sports and food inspection, as well as some newer applications, according to Manuel.

"For example, we have some nice projects in remote sensing," he said. "The weight, features and competitive price of our hyperspectral cameras enable them to be deployed in such applications."

"We supply cameras able to solve a problem that multiple cameras used to address, and at a lower price point," he said.

Looking at the business side of the industry, Manuel, like most others at the show, was optimistic.

"Photonfocus is growing and getting stronger every day," he said. "We deliver quality and high-end users know what they can get from us."

Looking forward, Manuel suggested that higher-end products could help grow business for the company, and the industry overall, and that the company is also developing some new products that will "really help speed up some applications."
