OMRON Corporation, a global developer of industrial automation products, has announced that it has agreed to acquire Sentech Co., Ltd., a manufacturer of industrial cameras, in a deal that will be completed on July 3, 2017.

Based in Ebina, Japan, Sentech develops area scan and line scan industrial cameras for machine vision, medical, and laboratory applications including models available with Camera Link, CoaXPress, GigE, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, analog, and HD output. Cameras range in size from 0.3 MPixel to 16 MPixel and feature some of the latest CMOS and CCD image sensors from companies such as ON Semiconductor (Aptina and Truesense models), CMOSIS, e2v, and Sony.

With the acquisition, OMRON, which is based in Kyoto, Japan, acquires "ultra-compact high-resolution cameras, along with related design and development technologies," according to a company press release. OMRON plans to combine Sentech cameras with the company’s various industrial robots and quality inspection systems, which will enable the exchange of image data between many different processes. In doing so, OMRON aims to "realize innovative manufacturing environments with significantly enhanced quality and productivity."

Sentech will now operate as OMRON Sentech Co., Ltd, and with the acquisition, OMRON will work to develop an "ultra-compact and high-definition smart camera," which the company says can be achieved by combining Sentech camera design technology with OMRON’s image processing technology. OMRON also wants to develop and incorporate a camera into a pick-and-place robot arm to enable 3D recognition of robotics, as well as other automation systems that eliminate dependence on human vision.
