In 2009, Aptina Imaging spun out as an independent company from under Micron Technology, which launched the image sensor business the year before. Five years later, Aptina has completeled the purchase of color filter array (CFA) processing and imager probe assets from Micron.

Following the purchase, Aptina will operate a fabrication facility in Nampa, Idaho that employs nearly 100 employees who will work closely with Aptina’s existing pixel optics research and development team. The purchase of this asset will enable Aptina to accelerate its research and development innovation cycle, and with in-house CFA processing and development, the company will be able to speed up the development of customized products to fit customer needs. In addition, the imager probe asset will enable Aptina to scale and speed produce time-to-market, according to the press release.

"The collective experience of the new teams and the innovation capability now in-house at Aptina allows us to accelerate what we do best; provide intelligent imaging solutions for challenging customer issues,” said Jeff Mendiola, Vice President of Operations for Aptina."

Aptina was recently acquired by ON Semiconductor in an effort to establish the company as a leader in the fast-growing segment of image sensors in the automotive and industrial semiconductor markets. Now with Aptina’s acquisition of Micron assets, the business is set to grow even larger. In addition to hiring 100 new manufacturing roles, Aptina will hire management, development, and support roles to bring its presence in Idaho to approximately 250 total employees.
