In order to accelerate its entry into the "Optical 3D digitization" sector, the ZEISS Industrial Metrology business group has acquired the majority interest in Steinbichler Optotechnik, a southern-Germany based company that develops optical measurement and testing technology.

Steinbichler Optiotechnik—a company that has been around for more than 25 years—has a global network of more than 200 people and develops systems for digitization with optical 3D sensors and in surface inspection on car body and sheet metal parts. Additionally, the company develops of interferometric tire inspection systems, which provide nondestructive testing and quality control by using shearography and are used worldwide for car/truck/aerospace and F1 tire inspection.

"The competencies and positioning of Steinbichler Optotechnik GmbH and ZEISS Industrial Metrology are the perfect match," said Dr. Marcus Steinbichler, Managing Partner of Steinbichler Optotechnik. "Access to the ZEISS global distribution and service organization will now enable us to reach more customers and enter additional sectors.
"
He continued, "The interaction of the Steinbichler portfolio with the ZEISS software line will generate synergies and potential for the benefit of the customers. As we have already been collaborating closely on developments for many years, we know ZEISS very well indeed and are now evolving the solid, proven partnership into a joint company with its focus firmly on the future."

ZEISS and Steinbichler recently collaborated on the development of the ZEISS EAGLE EYE II triangulation laser scanner, which is designed for car body metrology. Implementing Steinbichler’s portfolio with software from ZEISS, such as the ZEISS PiWeb platform and surface measuring programs, will benefit customers worldwide, according to the press release.

"This will further strengthen the ZEISS Industrial Metrology business group in the field of optical measuring technology, promote digitization and position it as a solutions provider in the area of quality processes in car body production. In the future, ZEISS will therefore cover the entire process from the CAD data model and digitization right up to car body shell inspection," said Dr. Rainer Ohnheiser, Head of the Industrial Metrology business group.

Subject to the approval of the authorities, the transaction is due to be finalized by mid-summer this year. The company's headquarters will remain in Neubeuern, Germany, and Dr. Marcus Steinbichler will also head the company as its Managing Director.
