McNaughton-McKay Electric Company has won Smart Vision Light’s contest for developing an innovativevision system that features the company’s LED lighting.

Winners of $1,000 for the contest, McNaughton-McKay Electric Company developed anautomotive panel tab and clip inspection system that utilizes two Cognex In-Sight 7020 vision systems with L300-625-W linear lights from Smart Vision Lights. The system evaluates parts to ensure that black tabs are bent in place and the brass clips are present during the automotive inspection process.

In 2013, we wrote an article on the contest winner,ControlVision, which won the contest for a robotic system designed for the automation and inspection of plastic production Plastics company Sistema had introduced a new range of plastic food containers that used smaller clips, and issues in the manual production process arose that led to the search for an automated solution. In order to keep with up demand, Sistema tasked ControlVision with the integration of a system would ensure accuracy for the clip placement while maintaining speed on the conveyor belt.

ControlVision’s system used two vision-guided Adept robots to add the clips to containers at the rate of one every two seconds. Upstream of each robot, used to pick and place the clip, were a pair of scout scA640-74gmcameras from Basler with 640x480 resolution. With a 25mm focal length Fujinon lens from Fujifilm, these two cameras capture a 250mm x 200mm field of view of the clip, which are sent to Control Vision's VisionServer software to determine their position.
