AUGUST 14--Voith Paper Inc., a supplier of manufacturing technology for the paper industry, has purchased two Cognex Corp. (Natick, MA; www.cognex.com.) SmartView web-inspection systems for a project with a mill in the southeastern United States. The SmartView systems will be used to inspect coated newsprint used for Sunday magazines and advertising inserts as it is being manufactured. The Cognex vision systems will inspect the newsprint for holes, spots, and streaks, before and after coating operations.

SmartView automatically detects, identifies, and displays defects in papers and other materials as they are being produced. Cognex has sold more than 100 SmartView systems since its release in February 2000, making it the most successful product launch in the history of Cognex's Surface Inspection Systems Division.
