OCTOBER 5--Already a staple in many PC models and peripherals, the IEEE 1394 high-speed digital interface is making gains in consumer electronics markets, according to Cahners In-Stat Group (Scottsdale, AZ; www.instat.com). In 2000, more than 35 million PC-based and consumer electronics products were equipped with IEEE 1394, and the high-tech market-research firm projects that that number will exceed 200 million by 2005.

"We expect positive market momentum this year but at a much more moderate growth rate, as the tech industry slump this year has slowed PC shipments, has delayed faster penetration of the interface, and has slowed the overall growth of end markets," says Joyce Putscher, a director at In-Stat. The market also faces competition from other interfaces, such as USB 2.0 and DVI, that may have significant impacts in selected markets. While the breadth of applications for IEEE 1394 ultimately points to a tremendous opportunity, it also results in industry conflicts and legislative and regulatory involvement.

In-Stat also found that total 1394 devices grew by 192% in 2000 over 1999, in which PC-based products accounted for most of the shipments. However, digital consumer electronics are expected to overtake PC devices in 2001.
