The market is roughly divided into six areas, namely processing equipment, factory automation cameras, and test applications geared for industrial purposes and security, automotive and ITS, and medical applications. Recently Fuji-Keizai summarized its forecasts for the image-processing equipment market through 2010. As reported by Nikkei Electronics, Fuji-Keizai has predicted the overall market will grow 29.1% to ¥729.6 billion ($6.35 billion) in 2010 compared with 2006.

Among the six areas, the fastest growth is anticipated for the automotive and ITS area. The application market will expand 88.2% compared with 2006 to ¥39.9 billion in 2010, Fuji-Keizai forecast. Rear-view cameras and omnidirectional camera systems that provide views from behind a car and overhead views of the vehicle will drive the market in particular.

The second largest growth is anticipated for the security application market, including monitoring cameras, following the automotive and ITS application market. The market is predicted to expand 39.4% compared with 2006 to ¥165.1 billion in 2010. As the presence of a monitoring camera used to be effective enough to prevent crimes, the inclusion of image processing technology wasn't essential, according to Fuji-Keizai. The company predicted that biometric verification technologies using images shot with monitoring cameras will spread from now.
