• DisplaySearch says TFT LCD equipment spending to decline
  OCTOBER 2--DisplaySearch (Austin, TX; www.displaysearch.com), a leader in FPD market research and consulting, reported in its latest Quarterly TFT LCD Supply/Demand and Capital Spending Report that, because of lower than anticipated notebook PC demand and continued capacity investments, TFT LCD prices are not expected to rise until Q4'02, assuming current exchange rates.
• PICMG issues CompactPCI packet-switching backplane specification
  SEPTEMBER 28--The PCI Industrial Computers Manufacturers Group (PICMG; Wakefield, MA) has published a new specification, denoted PICMG 2.16, for a CompactPCI packet-switching backplane (CompactPCI/PSB).
• Memory-card market set to grow
  SEPTEMBER 10--The market for memory cards--small, portable memory devices used to transfer data and images across multiple consumer applications--is predicted to have rapid growth over the next three to five years.

• DisplaySearch report projects market growth
  SEPTEMBER 4--According to DisplaySearch (Austin, TX), a leader in flat-panel-display (FPD) market research and consulting, in its latest quarterly large-area TFT LCD shipment report, large-area (10 in. and larger) TFT LCD-unit shipments for the notebook-PC, LCD-monitor, LCD-TV, industrial, and Internet-appliance markets rose 41% year-over-year (Y/Y) and 23% quarter-over-quarter (Q/Q) in Q2'01 to a record high of 10.5 million units.
• ATI and Intel support IEEE 1394 as multimedia connection standard
  AUGUST 30--ATI Technologies Inc. (Thornhill, Ont., Canada; www.ati.com) and Intel Corp. have announced their support of the IEEE 1394 standard for multimedia device connection to the personal computer.
• 2-GHz PCs ready for launch
  AUGUST 28--Nearly every major PC manufacturer will release new models sporting Pentium 4 chips running at 2 GHz and 1.9 GHz, according to several sources. The chips will appear in high-end consumer PCs as well as in corporate desktops and workstations.
• SEMI posts 40% decline in worldwide equipment shipments
  AUGUST 27--The latest consensus survey from Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI; www.semi.org) reveals that capital-equipment suppliers are even more pessimistic about when an upturn will come than the analysts that cover them.
