  • Vision system measures dental morphology
SEPTEMBER 20--Dr. Pertti Pirttiniemi and his colleagues in the department of dentistry and professors Janne Heikkil?nd Olli Silv?in the department of electrical engineering at the University of Oulu (Oulu, Finland) have developed a vision-based system using an off-the-shelf video camera, a frame grabber, a PC, and special measurement software that automates measurement of the distances and angles between morphologically interesting points on dental crowns.
  • USB On-The-Go Specification for digital-appliance connectivity released
SEPTEMBER 6--The Universal Serial Bus (USB) Implementers Forum (Santa Clara, CA) has released the On-The-Go Supplement to the USB 2.0 Specification. This supplement defines a method for portable devices to expand upon their basic personal-computer (PC) connectivity.
  • USB Implementers Forum signals broad development of Hi-Speed USB 2.0
AUGUST 30--Intel vice president Louis Burns, in his keynote address Wednesday at the Intel Developer Forum, Fall 2001 (San Jose, CA), gave the first-ever demonstration of a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 digital video camera connected to an Intel Pentium 4 processor platform based on an Intel prototype chipset with an integrated USB 2.0 controller.
  • National Instruments to host 14 technical conferences in North America
AUGUST 29--National Instruments (Austin, TX) has announced plans for the NI Technical Symposium, a series of measurement and automation conferences in 14 cities across the United States and Canada. The NI Technical Symposium begins Oct. 2 in Montreal, Canada, and wraps up Dec. 6 in Golden, CO.
  • IBM researchers build single-molecule computer circuit
AUGUST 28--IBM (Yorktown Heights, NY;www.ibm.com) researchers have created and demonstrated reportedly the world's first logic-performing circuit within a single molecule, which may someday lead to a new class of smaller and faster computers that consume less power than today's machines.
  • FDA clears camera pill to photograph small intestine
AUGUST 27--The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently cleared for marketing a swallowable capsule containing a tiny camera that snaps pictures twice a second as it glides through the small intestine.
  • Cognex hosts free machine-vision seminars
AUGUST 23--Cognex Corp. (Natick, MA; www.cognex.com) will host a series of half-day seminars demonstrating how new vision-sensor technology can be used to solve automated inspection tasks.
  • Upcoming NIST conference to explore biometric technology
AUGUST 15-The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST; Gaithersburg, MD) is holding the Biometric Consortium's annual fall conference, BC2001, to showcase recent advances in the field and examine technological, business, and security issues facing the biometrics industry, personal-authentication-system developers, and end users.
  • Kodak to develop, launch full-field digital mammography system
AUGUST 9--Eastman Kodak Company (Rochester, NY; www.kodak.com) reaffirmed its intent to develop a full-field digital mammography (FFDM) system based upon the same direct amorphous selenium technology successfully used in Kodak's digital radiography systems for general radiography.
  • IBM scientists take significant step toward production of flexible electronics
AUGUST 8--IBM (Yorktown Heights, NY; www.ibm.com) scientists have made a major scientific advance in materials that could lead to the development of very-low-cost, low-power organic electronics for use in flexible computer screens, watches, smart cards, ID tags, theater tickets, and more.
