Technology News Highlights 2001 p5 of 6:

  • Wavelets hold the key to JPEG2000 compression
JUNE 8--Last year, Adolf Knoll, deputy librarian of the National Library of the Czech Republic in Prague, set out to determine the most-effective wavelet software for still images.
  • IBM to quadruple disk-drive density
MAY 23--IBM Corp. (Yorktown Heights, NY; www.research.ibm.com) has demonstrated an innovative type of magnetic coating that is expected to increase the data density of hard-disk drives by more than four times to 100 Gbits/sq in. of disk area.
  • Disk drives outperform tape drives in research use
MAY 21--Boulder Instruments (Longmont, CO; www.boulderinstruments.com) has teamed up with the MIT Haystack Observatory (Groton, MA) to develop the next generation of StreamStor digital data-streaming storage systems based on magnetic-disk technology.
  • IBM scientists reveal new computer-display technology
MAY 18--Researchers at IBM Corp. (Yorktown, NY; www.research.ibm.com) claim to have discovered a new process for manufacturing computer displays that can improve screen quality and viewing angles while saving manufacturing costs.
  • Video processor pioneers neurosurgery
APRIL 27--Surgeons at the Wallace-Kettering Neuroscience Institute (WKNI; Dayton, OH) use computer technology to fuse magnetic-resonance-imaging (MRI) and computed- tomography (CT) anatomical scans with positron-emission-tomography (PET) biochemical scans to operate on brain lesions with safe and accurate procedures.
  • Optical storage products achieve 9 Gbytes
APRIL 24--The Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA; Santa Barbara, CA: www.osta.org), an international trade association that promotes the use of recordable optical technologies and products, reports that shipments of 9.1-Gbyte (14X) magneto-optical (MO) 5.25-in.-disk products have begun.
  • Image digitizers mix radar and graphics data for recorders
In many military and medical applications, video, graphic, and text data are mixed at various stages to produce a final image on a high-resolution monitor. After these data are combined, the resulting image is then shown in red-green-blue (RGB) format on the display. To record radar and graphics data, images must be digitized from the RGB output driving the monitor.
  • PCB machines check eyelets with vision
Vision system checks each hole before insertion of eyelets--hollow rivets used in the production of printed-circuit boards that help to form a mechanical solder joint that increases circuit reliability, especially where high currents are involved.
  • Research focuses on bionic eye
MARCH 29--Scientists are closer to creating a bionic eye as a result of new research showing how the eye provides sketchy images and the brain interprets them to conceive what we see.
  • Facial biometrics combines with barcoding
MARCH 28--eTrue (Southborough, MA; www.etrue.com) is integrating its TrueFace two-dimensional (2-D) facial-recognition technology with the Bio4 (Portsmouth, Hampshire PO3 5XR, England; www.bio4.co.uk) 3-D facial recognition and 2-D barcode system to deliver secure personal identity applications.
