• Researcher cautiously optimistic about chip-market growth
  APRIL 29--Although the semiconductor industry experienced four consecutive quarters of revenue growth in 2002, it is too soon to deem that the industry has recovered, reports In-Stat/MDR (Scottsdale, AZ; www.instat.com).
• North American semiconductor-equipment industry posts B-to-B of 0.99 in March
  APRIL 22--The North American-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted $823 million in orders in March 2003 and a book-to-bill ratio of 0.99, according to a recent Express Report published by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (www.semi.org).
• Ethernet-enabled devices to impact manufacturing systems
  APRIL 22--The aggregate market volume for industrial Ethernet devices has grown at more than a 50% annual rate during the last two years, despite a difficult worldwide market for automation equipment, according to a study by the ARC Advisory Group (Dedham, MA;ARCweb.com).
• DisplaySearch conference shines
  APRIL 14--DisplaySearch (Austin TX; www.displaysearch.com), a flat-panel display (FPD) market research and consulting firm, held its US FPD Conference 2003 earlier this month.
• Biometrics global market to surge through 2007
  APRIL 14--According to a soon-to-be-released report from Business Communications Company Inc. (Norwalk, CT; www.bccresearch.com), the global market for biometrics is estimated at $946 million in 2002.
• Global chip sales total $11.8 billion
  MARCH 31--Worldwide semiconductor sales totaled $11.8 billion in February 2003, a 3.3% decrease from the $12.2 billion in revenue reported in January 2003 and an 18% increase from the $10.0 billion recorded in February 2002, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (San Jose, CA; www.sia-online.org).
• LCD monitor shipments rise
  MARCH 28--DisplaySearch (Austin, TX) reveals in its latest Quarterly Desktop Monitor Shipment and Forecast Report that worldwide LCD monitor shipments rose 30% Q/Q and 54% Y/Y to a record-high 9.9 million units, ahead of suppliers' aggregate 29% forecast.
• IMS/PCB book-to-bill ratio increases
  MARCH 27--IPC-Association Connecting Electronics Industries (Northbrook, IL; www.ipc.org) has announced the findings from its monthly Interconnect Manufacturing Services (IMS)/Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Statistical Program.
• Analysts at Gartner symposium discuss top security issues
  MARCH 27--Many companies are trying to find products that will suit their security/surveillance needs, according to Gartner Inc. (Stamford, CT; www.gartner.com)at its Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2003, taking place this week in San Diego, CA.
• Demand increases for inspection equipment
  MARCH 26--According to market-researcher Frost & Sullivan (San Jose, CA; www.electronics.frost.com), the world surface-mount-technology inspection-equipment market totaled $403 million in 2002.
