  JANUARY 21--The 1394 Trade Association (Grapevine, TX) elected Eric Anderson of Apple Computer as its 2003 chairman, with Max Bassler of Molex Inc. as vice chair, during its first quarter meetings recently.
• Strasbourg to play host to first SPIE Photonics Europe conference and exhibition
  JANUARY 20--The International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE; Bellingham, WA: www.spie.org) has unveiled plans for a major European optics conference and exhibition in 2004.
• IPOT 2003 Preview--Visions for the Future
  Two leading industry events took place at the NEC in Birmingham, UK, February 12 and 13, 2003.   JANUARY 8--Leaders of the 1394 Trade Association (Dallas, TX; www.1394ta.org) say that the arrival of the first computer and storage products built with the new ultrahigh-speed FireWire 800 multimedia bus offers consumers the industry's best-ever audio-video connectivity and sets the stage for a new, exciting era of networking based on the enhanced IEEE 1394b standard.
• DisplaySearch predicts LCD TV sales will accelerate in 2003
  JANUARY 6--DisplaySearch (Austin, TX), a leader in FPD market research and consulting, identified in its Q4'02 Quarterly LCD TV Shipment and Forecast Report that LCD TV demand is expected to explode in 2003.
• Dataquest predicts expanding demand for chips
  JANUARY 6--Silicon-wafer demand will begin a major expansion between 2003 and 2004, as it will be driven by a combination of a recovery of device demand and the startup of 300-mm fabs, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Inc. (www.gartner.com)
• Global semiconductor sales up 1.3% in November
  JANUARY 6--Global semiconductor sales reached $12.68 billion in November, continuing the trend that began in 4Q01, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (www.semichips.org).
