• Nikon integrates industrial metrology and semiconductor inspection
  APRIL 4--Nikon Instruments Inc. (Melville, NY; www.nikonusa.com) has announced the integration of two high-precision industrial metrology business units, Semiconductor Inspection and Nexiv Vision Measuring Systems, under the SITECH Division located in Tempe, AZ.
• Cognex receives $1.8 million order from German paper manufacturer
  APRIL 1--Cognex Corporation (Natick, MA; www.cognex.com) announced that the Felix Schoeller Group, a German manufacturer of high-end papers, will integrate the Cognex SmartView surface-inspection system at multiple manufacturing plants throughout Germany and Canada.
• One local CEO takes no pay
  MARCH 29--For the last three years, Robert Shillman, founder and CEO of Natick, MA-based Cognex Corp. (www.cognex.com), declined an annual base salary.
• Numenta formed by Jeff Hawkins to apply neuroscience research to computing problems
  MARCH 29--Computer-industry veterans Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky (founders of Palm Computing and Handspring) have announced they are forming a new company named Numenta.
• Axsys Technologies to acquire Diversified Optical Products
  MARCH 29--Axsys Technologies Inc. (Rocky Hill, CT; www.axsys.com) has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Diversified Optical Products Inc., a privately held manufacturer of high-end thermal surveillance camera systems and lenses, for $60 million in cash.
• Adept launches global vertical market business initiative
  MARCH 28--Adept Technology (Livermore, CA), a manufacturer of robotic systems, motion-control technology, and machine-vision technology, has launched a new global vertical market business initiative.
• Cantronic Systems announces chairman of the board
  MARCH 28--Cantronic Systems (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada), a designer, manufacturer, and marketer in IR night-vision technology, has announced David Shaw's appointment as the chairman of the board of directors, a position he has held as of March 4, 2005.
• Buchanan Automation named new distributor of ipd systems
  MARCH 22--ipd (Billerica, MA; www.goipd.com), the intelligent products division of Coreco Imaging Inc., has named Buchanan Automation Inc. (Mukilteo, WA; www.buchanan-a.com), as a Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Northern California distributor of its machine-vision solutions.
• Photron awarded White Sands Missile Range contract
  MARCH 22--Photron USA Inc. (San Diego, CA; www.photron.com) has been awarded a contract from White Sands Missile Range to supply the advanced ultima APX-RS line of high-speed digital-camera systems to replace aging high-speed film cameras currently in use.
• Fairchild Imaging appoints Boyd Fowler as VP & CTO
  MARCH 21--Fairchild Imaging (Milpitas, CA; www.fairchildimaging.com) announced the appointment of Boyd Fowler to the position of vice president and chief technology officer.
