• NIST imaging technique clears window on universe
  DECEMBER 12--A fast, efficient image-enhancement technique developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST; Gaithersburg, MD, USA; www.nist.gov) and originally applied to improving monochrome microscope images has proved equally effective at the sharpening details on color images of distant galaxies produced by the Hubble Space Telescope.
• Attendees and exhibitors flock to VISION 2006
  NOVEMBER 13--VISION again confirmed its position as the most important exposition platform for the machine-vision industry. More than 5200 visitors came to Stuttgart from November 7 to 9.
• Space Shuttle's vision-guided robot arm captures tile images
  JULY 25--During the recent STS-121 mission, NASA's Discovery Space Shuttle deployed an imaging system mounted at the end of the Shuttle's 50-ft robotic arm to inspect the craft's thermal protection system.
• RedShift Systems names COO to scale production of TLV line
  JULY 25--RedShift Systems (Waltham, MA, USA) a manufacturer of optical thermal imaging products, has named Charles (Chip) Marshall as COO. Marshall is an expert in commercializing technologies, including infrared imaging products, and launching them into volume production.
• Stemmer Imaging again reports double-digit growth
  JULY 25--In the financial year 2005/2006, ending June 30, 2006, Stemmer Imaging (Puchheim, Germany; www.stemmer-imaging.de) was again able to record double-digit growth. At 23.2 million euros, sales were 11.7% higher than the previous year.
• Flavor-provider selects Fluid Imaging for quality control
  JULY 24--WILD Flavors (Cincinnati, OH, USA; www.wildflavors.com) has selected a FlowCAM system from Fluid Imaging Tehnologies (Edgecomb, ME, USA; www.fluidimaging.com) for its quality control applications.

  JULY 21--StockerYale (Salem, NH, USA; www.stockeryale.com) announced its financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2006.
• Cognex posts strong quarter, nabs aerospace contract
  JULY 21--Cognex (Natick, MA, USA; www.cognex.com)announced its financial results for the second quarter ended July 2, 2006. "I am very pleased with our results for the second quarter of 2006," said Dr. Robert J. Shillman, company chairman and CEO.
• EMVA annual conference draws record number of attendees
  JULY 18--The 4th European Machine Vision Business Conference of the European Machine Vision Association (EMVA; Frankfurt am Main, Germany; www.emva.org) took place in Tampere, Finland, on June 30 and July 1, 2006.
• Applied Vision disputes QUISS claim of first Gigabit Ethernet system
  JULY 17-- Applied Vision (Akron, OH, USA; www.appliedvision.com) has issued a statement opposing a recent claim by QUISS (Puchheim, Germany; www.quiss.com) to have developed the "first [inspection] system worldwide to use Gigabit Ethernet technology to inspect shells and lined shells."
