Using high-level software functions, systems developers can now rapidly deploy optical character recognition, pattern matching, and image measurement and functions in their machine vision systems. In the food and packaging industries, these algorithms are being employed in systems to validate the sizes, defects, color, and barcodes of packaged products. In pharmaceutical and automotive applications, where three-dimensional imaging may be required to validate the structural integrity of a blister pack or car panel, stereo, structured light, or fringe-pattern analysis algorithms may be required. This series of articles examines numerous types of image segmentation and classification algorithms and how they can best be deployed and the future role benchmarks may play.
