The National Research Council of Canada and AV&R Vision & Robotics (Montreal, QC, Canada) have signed a collaborative research and development agreement for the technology transfer of a non-contact 3-D measurement system that will address the precison and speed requirements of AV&R’s customers.

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC; Ottawa, ON, Canada) and AV&R Vision & Robotics (Montreal, QC, Canada) have signed a collaborative research and development agreement for the technology transfer of a non-contact 3-D measurement system that will address the precison and speed requirements of AV&R’s customers.

AV&R currently offers visual inspection systems surface defects such as dents, nicks, and scratches. To determine if a repair can be made the defect’s shape and topography must be determined, requiring 3-D measurements with a known accuracy. The 3-D micro-defect inspection solution developed by the NRC will allow AV&R to offer a complete automated inspection solution to its customers.

“The biggest challenge for AV&R was to find a fast high-precision system that could work in a production plant floor environment," says Sebastien Parent, Chief Technology Officer - Automated Visual Inspection at AV&R. "The system developed by the NRC and integrated by AV&R will be innovative since it will offer enough flexibility and control to achieve this goal."

AV&R offers intelligent automation solutions designed to optimize manufacturing processes and to control quality. These solutions cover two critical areas of expertise: robotic finishing (eg, profiling, deburring, polishing) and automated visual inspection. AV&R works in the gas turbine industry, mostly on blades, vanes, disks, and blisks, and hassolutions installed around the world.
