CMOS image sensor developer CMOSIS has announced the acquisition of the Swiss company AWAIBA, which manufactures line scan CMOS sensors designed for industrial web inspection, sub-millimeter CMOS camera modules for endoscopy, and on-board automotive cameras.
The acquisition of AWAIBA, which was closed on August 4, is a natural fit for CMOSIS and will strengthen the company’s presence in existing markets while expanding it in other segments, according to Luc De Mey, CMOSIS Chairman and CEO.
"The acquisition became possible after TA Associates stepped in as a strong financial partner of CMOSIS earlier this year," he said. "This enabled horizontal expansion and growth acceleration."
He added, "AWAIBA is a profitable and well-established brand with an attractive and strongly growing client base. We are very excited to welcome their experienced team having an impressive track record of innovation and deep understanding of customer needs. This permits us to even better serve our customers as an independent and pure-play supplier of CMOS image sensors."
Martin Waeny, AWAIBA founder and CEO, commented on the joining of the two companies, which he said will allow AWAIBA to secure the resources needed for the development of next-generation line scan and sub-millimeter sized image sensors.
"The newly combined entity will take a much stronger position as a leading supplier of high-quality CMOS image sensors in the consolidating markets of advanced image sensors."
A report published in July by IC Insights suggests that the image sensor market will exceed $13.2 billion b 2017. CMOSIS and AWAIBA will focus on such high-growth segments as machine vision, production cameras, traffic enforcement, medical devices, and consumer products.
