Cognex has introduced the StingRay attachable barcode scanning accessory, a patent-pending smartphone attachment that enables barcode scanning for light industrial and enterprise applications.

StingRay is attached over a smartphone’s flash and next to the camera, and the phone’s flash is transformed into an aiming pattern onto a barcode, eliminating the need for virtual on-screen aimers. The device uses the phone’s camera and is integrated with the Cognex Manatee Works barcode scanner software development kit, which supports decoding of more than 40 symbologies on all major mobile, desktop and server platforms, including Apple iOS and Google Android

"The StingRay accessory is a compelling example of the growing trend of mobile device solutions for retail, healthcare, logistics, commercial services and other enterprise applications," said Carl Gerst, Senior Vice President, ID Products. "This aiming technology, combined with our premier barcode scanner SDK, displaces traditional, purpose-built mobile computers with powerful, optimized smartphones."

Currently, the StingRay device supports iPhone 5, 5s, 6, 6s, 6 plus, and 6s Plus, but will soon support the Samsung Galaxy as well.
