Pleora Technologies becomes first machine vision company to join NBASE-T Alliance

Pleora Technologies has announced that it is the first company from the machine vision industry to join the NBASE-T Alliance, a consortium collaborating on new technologies that extend the bandwidth capabilities of twisted-pair copper cabling using standard Ethernet technology.

Developed by the alliance is the NBASE-T specification, which defines a new type of Ethernet signaling that boosts the speed of twisted-pair cabling up to 5 Gbps, which is beyond its designed limit of 1 Gbps, for distances up to 100 meters. The specification was initially developed for wireless access points coping with increasing data requirements, but the technology is a natural evolution for high-performance imaging thanks to its increased bandwidth, low-cost cabling, and compatibility with existing GigE Vision software, suggested Pleora Technologies in a press release.

Earlier this year, Pleora announced the launch of a platform of NBASE-T products that transmit uncompressed high-bandwidth GigE Vision-compliant images at speeds up to 5 Gb/s over low-cost Cat 5e cabling. The first release in the platform is a development kit for GigE NBASE-T imaging or camera design, with an embedded interface, reference design, and IP core to follow. The GigE Vision over NBASE-T development kit contains an NBASE-T development board, fully assembled with Pleora’s Camera Link adapter board. By installing the NBASE-T NIC and the software, connecting the Ethernet cable to the development kit board and the computer, and connecting the supply power—users can evaluate and develop an NBASE-T imaging solution.

"Our GigE Vision over NBASE-T platform helps imaging system manufacturers and designers meet increasing bandwidth requirements, while taking advantage of existing cabling in retrofit upgrades and less expensive, field-terminated cabling in new installations, without requiring modifications to GigE Vision-compliant software."

Peter Jones, chairman of the NBASE-T Alliance, also commented: "The NBASE-T Alliance is playing a critical role in the deployment of products that extend bandwidth capabilities beyond Gigabit Ethernet," he said. "Our work has accelerated the adoption of NBASE-T technology in traditional wired telecom applications, and the addition of new members such as Pleora enables migration of the technology into new markets.”
