Among the numerous machine vision and imaging topics that will be covered at VISION 2016 is embedded vision, which is expected to be a hot topic at this year’s show.
Embedded vision, according to Messe Stuttgart, has changed the world of industrial machine vision and even led to the foundation of a VDMA working group.
"Interest in our working group increased enormously after the presentation of our study, and we now have 20 active members," said Dr. Klaus-Henning Noffz, Head of the VDMA Embedded Vision Working Group and CEO of Silicon Software.
The study mentioned by Noffz was the Embedded Vision Study Group (EVSG) Report, which was presented at the G3 Future Standards Forum in Chicago in the summer of 2015. In the study, the technical challenges of embedded vision are laid out.
"Previously, embedded technology was concerned with incorporating everything compactly in a single unit, which can also be used on the go," he said. "But embedded vision goes so much further: the focus is on clarification of the role machine vision can play in relation to Industry 4.0."
Experts are now asking themselves how units need to be designed to ensure that “images can be inspected where they are taken.”
"For instance," said Noffz, "how can a sensor be combined with processor intelligence for it to feed its image data automatically into a network? It all comes down to creating decentralized intelligence."
