Dual cameras inspect oil drums

Scorpion Vision (http://scorpionvision.co.uk) has developed a semi-automated dual-camera system to inspect the interior of new oil drums at the end of a production line. The two cameras chosen to capture images from inside the drum are attached to a small probe that is lowered into and raised out of a 2-in.-diameter aperture on the top of the drum.

For this reason, Scorpion Vision chose two miniature DFK 23G618 cameras fromThe Imaging Source (www.theimagingsource.com). Interfaced to a PC using a 15-m Power over Ethernet (PoE) cable, both cameras were fitted with TLH CCS M12 lens-mount adapters, enabling small 1.58-mm fish-eye lenses to be attached to both.

Because of size constraints, the engineers attached LED strips ofOsram (www.osram.com) Dragontape to the side of each camera that illuminate the inside of the oil drums.

The cameras each capture 180° fish-eye views of the top and the bottom of each drum, enabling every centimeter of the internal structure of the drum to be inspected. Scorpion Image Sentinelsoftware running on a PC was then used to capture and display uncompressed video at live video speeds on the PC's monitor.
