A long, strange summer

The social aspects of COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines can be tough. Yes, they are important and necessary, and among the least serious of the impacts caused by the virus. Still, if you've felt a bit stir crazy recently, I can relate.

If you are an outgoing person, the social aspects of COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines can be tough. Yes, they are important and necessary, and among the least serious of the impacts caused by the virus. Still, if you are someone out there who has felt a bit stir crazy recently, I can relate.

For the last several months, my wife and I have worked full time at home while raising our two boys (4 and 1). Between work and parenting duties each day, little room exists for anything else. On the weekends, our options are more limited than ever before with social distancing guidelines in place. But instead of feeling sorry for ourselves, we must do the best we can to make life as normal as possible.

I think this applies to the machine vision space as well. I was really looking forward to going to The Vision Show in Boston and VISION in Stuttgart, and I’m sure that many of you were as well. How could you not? These events offer a great place to network and talk with colleagues and friends, learn about the latest technologies, meet new companies, and have some fun while doing it. While we can’t do that this year, it is important that we stay connected and up to date on the latest in machine vision and make the best of our situation.

One way we’re trying to help, to that end, is sharing articles and news on the latest innovations in machine vision with you, our readers. This issue offers a good example. In it, we cover such topics as the latest developments in line scan imaging, novel lighting techniques that improve image quality, a new sensor process that enables SWIR and visible light capture on a single chip, and a collaboration that puts artificial intelligence inside of Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot.

So in an attempt to make sure we all still enjoy the summer, we’ve spent a lot more time with just the four of us than we have ever before, particularly outside in whether in our yard or the pool, or by the water in Maine. I’ve shared here a handful of pictures of us from the summer here. It has been a bit of an odd for us, but there is no doubt we’re making the most of it. I hope that if you’re reading this now, you’ve been able to do the same and that your summer was a great one, even if it was a bit different than normal.
