MARCH 6--Able Software (Lexington, MA; www.ablesw.com), a developer in the Windows-based raster-to-vector conversion and 3-D imaging software market, has released a new version of its automated raster-to-vector-conversion software--R2V. This new release has added support to conversions between the UTM, latitude/longitude, and the State Plane coordinate systems. Control points can be transformed between the projection systems and applied to convert vector data layers to a new map-projection system. The 3-D VRML export for DEM (digital terrain model) has been improved to include image draping and color texture information for 3-D visualization through the Internet and physical model creation using a 3-D printer.
R2V was developed by Able Software for mapping and GIS applications. It converts images stored in TIFF, GeoTIFF, BMP, JPEG, GIF, and RLC image formats to a vector file format, such as Arc/Info generate, ArcView Shape file, MapInfo MIF/MID file, AutoCAD DXF, IGES, and MapGuide SDL. Raster images can be registered to another image to correct geometric distortions and georeferenced to a real-world coordinate system. Raw uncompressed image formats, such as formats used by satellite imagery, can be opened using R2V's new raw image import function. Image regions of interest in any shape are used for cropping and automatic vectorization. Color image-classification function separates colors into vector data layers for easy editing and management. A 3-D DEM is created from labeled contour lines for 3-D visualization and analysis.
