In order to provide our readers with as many resources on imaging and machine vision as possible, Andy Wilson, Vision Systems Design Editor in Chief, has compiled a list of educational and informative books on various imaging topics that he personally recommends. - Adaptive Image Processing: A Computational Intelligence Perspective (Image Processing Series) by Ling Guan, Stuart William Perry, Hau San Wong: Adaptive image processing is one of the most important techniques in visual information processing, especially in early vision such as image restoration, filtering, enhancement, and segmentation. While existing books present some important aspects of the issue, there is not a single book that treats this problem from a viewpoint that is directly linked to human perception - until now.
- Soft Computing for Image Processingby Sankar K. Pal, Ashish Ghosh, Malay K. Kundu: Any task that involves decision-making can benefit from soft computing techniques which allow premature decisions to be deferred. The processing and analysis of images is no exception to this rule. In the classical image analysis paradigm, the first step is nearly always some sort of segmentation process in which the image is divided into (hopefully, meaningful) parts.
- Mathematical Nonlinear Image Processing by Edward R. Dougherty, Jaakko Astola: This book with a fast growing research area. The development of the subject springs from two factors: (1) the great expansion of nonlinear methods applied to problems in imaging and vision, and (2) the degree to which nonlinear approaches are both using and fostering new developments in diverse areas of mathematics.
- Image Processing for Computer Graphics by Jonas Gomes Luiz Velho, Silvo Levy (Translator): Image processing is concerned with the analysis and manipulation of images by computer. The focus of this book is to provide a thorough treatment of image processing with an emphasis on those aspects most used in computer graphics. Throughout, the authors concentrate on describing and analyzing the underlying concepts rather than on presenting algorithms or pseudocode.
- Mathematical Problems in Image Processing: Partial Differential Equations and the Calculus of Variations by Gilles Aubert, Pierre Kornprobst: The updated 2nd edition of this book presents a variety of image analysis applications, reviews their precise mathematics and shows how to discretize them. For the mathematical community, the book shows the contribution of mathematics to this domain, and highlights unsolved theoretical questions. For the computer vision community, it presents a clear, self-contained and global overview of the mathematics involved in image processing problems.
