APRIL 24--Actuality Systems Inc. (Burlington, MA; www.actuality.com), a provider of spatial 3-D visualization technology, has made the first European sale of its Perspecta 3D System to ENEA (Rome, Italy), the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy, and Environment. The Perspecta 3D System will be used as part of the center's applied research-and-development work in 3-D imaging of scientific data.

The Perspecta 3D System is a 360° spatial display, powered by Perspecta platform and application software (see Vision Systems Design, May 2001, p. 17). The system enables users to render high-resolution spatial images that can be viewed from any angle as the user moves around the display. The display itself illuminates a record 100 million volume pixels, or "voxels," using Actuality-patented technologies, within a transparent Lexan dome.

ENEA is a state-sponsored research organization established by the Italian government to expand the nation's technical horizons in several key areas: energy for the future, protection of the planet, health and human safety, environmental change, future technologies, and advanced technologies such as plasma fusion and high performance modeling and computing. ENEA operates 11 research centers as well as a number of regional offices across Italy.

Typical applications for the Perspecta 3D System include nuclear medical imaging, radiation treatment planning, surgical planning for doctors visualizing angiogram data or to more precisely locate tumor on an x-ray, CAT scan, or mammogram; air-traffic control; and security, visualizing the contents of freight or passenger luggage.
