NOVEMBER 27--Kopin Corp. (Taunton, MA; www.kopin.com) has been awarded a $3.5 million US Army contract to develop a full-color version of its CyberDisplay 1280, a 0.96-in.-diagonal active-matrix liquid-crystal display with 1280 x 1024-pixel resolution. The award follows Kopin's successful development of the monochrome CyberDisplay 1280, which has been integrated into helmet-mounted display systems for the RAH-66 Comanche Helicopter Program.
"Kopin's monochrome CyberDisplay 1280 allows the warfighter to clearly see high-resolution sensor imagery during day- and nighttime operations," the US Army said in a prepared statement. "A full-color version of the CyberDisplay 1280 not only provides the contrast necessary to capture more detailed images, but also provides the added capability of displaying color maps, color symbology, and sensor fused imagery (the process of converting multispectrum images into a color scene using sophisticated software algorithms), thus increasing the efficiency and capability of tomorrow's warfighter."
"The CyberDisplay 1280C will be developed as a drop-in replacement for our monochrome display, supporting a natural upgrade to color," said Michael Presz, general manager of Kopin's Visual Products Group. "We expect to incorporate significant advancements in display architecture and performance in order to achieve full 24-bit color performance at this resolution."
