JULY 19--Image Power Inc. (Vancouver, BC, Canada; www.imagepower.com) JPEG2000 technology is now available and shipping on Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) TMS320C6000 and TMS320C5000 DSP platforms. Also available is the previously announced JPEG2000 demo for the TI C6000-based Imaging Developer's Kit. The JPEG2000 codec technology is compliant with TI's eXpressDSP Real-Time Software standard, which enables rapid prototyping.

"Image Power is committed to delivering JPEG2000 technology on multiple software and hardware platforms while preserving a common application programming interface (API). We have accomplished a very important step by ensuring our JPEG2000 technology is compatible and optimized with TI's programmable digital-signal-processor product lines," said Stephen Swift, president of Image Power.

JPEG2000 is the next-generation International Organization for Standardization still-image compression standard for continuous-tone color compression. JPEG2000 addresses several weaknesses inherent in the existing JPEG standard, improving the image quality at low bit rates, providing efficient lossy and lossless coding in a single compression framework, and dramatically decreasing file sizes. A variety of imaging applications can take advantage of the scalable, high-performance, Cypress codec running on the C5000 and C6000 DSP platforms. Coupled with the ability of the C6000 DSPs to execute the performance-intense processing operations inherent in Cypress JPEG2000, the technology is targeted at manufacturers of embedded hardware applications such as image archiving, set-top boxes, Web browsing, document imaging, digital photography, medical imaging, remote sensing, printers, copiers and scanners. On the C5000 DSP platform, Cypress JPEG2000 is optimized for personal and portable products such as digital music players, 3G cell phones, and digital cameras.

Companies wishing to build JPEG2000 into their applications need only develop their applications once using the Image Power JPEG2000 common API. The API seamlessly interfaces with both Cypress JPEG2000 DSP technology and Blackbird custom hardware technology.
