APRIL 20--Radiant Imaging (Duvall, WA; www.radiantimaging.com) and Lumileds Lighting have announced a program aimed at facilitating the design process for systems utilizing Lumileds high-brightness LED sources. Under the arrangement, the companies will make Radiant Source Models of a full range of representative Lumileds light sources (including the Luxeon range) available for a nominal fee to the illumination design community. Radiant Source Models are accurate software models that fully describe a light source's angular and spatial luminance characteristics. These models are derived from an imaging measurement system, and are compatible with most major illumination design software packages. The light sources chosen for the measurements represent parts with a typical radiation pattern as published in the Luxeon data sheets.

"Up to now, the problem of characterizing light sources has often been left to the individual designer," notes Doug Silkwood, director of marketing at Lumileds Lighting. "However, LED technology changes very rapidly, so current, accurate data are critical for engineers developing new products. This program will make the data readily available to anyone who needs the information."

"This is the second source manufacturer to join us in supplying Radiant Source Models to the optical and illumination design community," said David R. Jenkins, Radiant Imaging vice president of sales and marketing. "The field of illumination design continues to grow and diversify, from automotive interiors and LCD backlights to innovative medical instruments. We believe that simplifying illumination design and eliminating multiple prototype iterations will enable these applications to fully exploit the potential of today's light sources." Jenkins also adds that he expects this cooperative program with Lumileds will soon be duplicated with other similar agreements with other source manufacturers.

Radiant Imaging Inc., founded in 1981, is a leader in imaging systems for light and color measurement and illumination engineering tools and services. Radiant Imaging's technologies are focused on providing lighting and display system manufacturers with enhanced design capabilities, greater product development efficiency, improved manufacturing productivity and increased competitive effectiveness in the world marketplace. Radiant Imaging's three major product areas are the ProMetric light and color measurement systems, Radiant Sources light source characterization systems and source data, and its contract Illumination Engineering Services.
