MAY 27--Lumetrics Inc. (Rochester, NY), an optical-measurement-device company, has signed a deal with Corning Tropel to provide the Fairport manufacturer with a dual interferometer. This device will assist in manufacturing metrology and instrumentation at Corning Tropel.
"It is exciting for our company to be working with Corning Tropel on this program," said John Hart, president and CEO of Lumetrics. "The technology developed at Lumetrics draws on the strength of Rochester's photonics sector. We are looking forward to demonstrating the increased accuracy and precision that can be achieved in the optical-measurement arena with the dual interferometer." The sale to Corning Tropel is significant for Lumetrics. The company employs 12 people in Rochester and anticipates future growth.
The measurements taken by the dual interferometer are extremely precise, calculated in microns. Saran wrap is 15 μm; a strand of hair can be as small as 17 μm. Such precision ensures accuracy in the measurement and collection of data. One dual interferometer unit typically costs $75,000--$100,000.
Founded in 2003, Lumetrics is an optics-based instrument company, providing solutions for noncontact optical measurement. The company creates versatile hardware and software instrumentation for a wide array of applications, including plastics, coatings, packaging, and optics. Lumetrics received early funding from The University Technology Seed Fund and The Monroe Fund, two funds managed by the Rochester-based venture-capital firm Trillium Group.
Corning Tropel Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Corning Incorporated. The company is a leader in precision optical subsystems and advanced form metrology instrumentation for the semiconductor, data storage, automotive, and industrial markets, located in Fairport, NY.
