MVTec Announces Partnership with Qualcomm

MVTec Software GmbH partners with Qualcomm Technologies to improve the integration of HALCON machine vision software with Qualcomm's Dragonwing processors, enabling faster and more efficient deep learning applications on embedded devices like smart cameras.

MVTec Software GmbH (Munich, Germany) announced a collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies to improve integration between MVTec’s HALCON machine vision software and Qualcomm (San Diego, CA, USA) Dragonwing processors’ neural processing units.

In a press release, MVTec explains the rationale for the collaboration, saying, “This access particularly benefits users of smart cameras, allowing deep learning applications to run on embedded devices with considerably higher speed and efficiency.”

For example, the technology integration between the software and hardware could help support applications such as defecting tiny defects in products in a manufacturing environment or reading challenging text on packages in a warehousing operation.

As an initial step, MVTec is developing an interface between HALCON software and the Qualcomm Dragonwing RB3 Gen 2 development kits, which leverage Qualcomm Technologies’ upstream Linux and AI framework. The kits are designed to ease development of AI-enabled solutions for robotics, vision, smart security.

The Linux-based development environment is built around the QCM6490 and QCS5430 processors.
