Digital cameras provide several advantages over analog cameras. To interface such cameras to the PCI bus, BitFlow is offering RoadRunner, a $2100 PCI card that is software configurable for four synchronized 8-bit cameras, two multiplexed 8- or 16-bit cameras, or one camera with four 8-bit taps. RoadRunner`s DMA engine places image data into the PC`s address space, transforming the PC memory into a frame buffer. The board conserves host CPU performance through interrupt-driven sync. Rather than poll for DMA completion, the board processes a list of DMA commands without host intervention. The result is transparent image transfer with minimal cost overhead.
