Polaroid Corp. (Cambridge, MA) and Intel Corp. (San Jose, CA) plan to provide low-cost digital cameras that can capture still pictures and, when connected to a personal computer based on the Intel 971 PC camera kit, provide video information. Intel is expected to include its PC camera silicon, software, and Flash miniature cards. Polaroid is providing its optics technology and imaging software. The universal serial bus and the FlashPix file format are supported by industry standards. Other features encompass video capture at 10 to 15 frames/s (CIF) and 20 to 25 frames/s (QCIF), a 768 ¥ 576 maximum pixel CMOS image sensor, and 16.7 million 24-bit true colors. Says Len Polizzotyto, Polaroid vice president, new ventures, "Utilizing Intel digital imaging technology, Polaroid expects to provide a PC camera tailored for home and business user needs."
